1. White Bread

White bread has refined flour and is associated with health risks. Although you will likely not experience short-term negative side effects, cutting this from your grocery list altogether is best. Healthier alternatives include corn tortillas, rye bread, and lettuce.

2. Sugary Cereals

Excess sugar is known to cause health risks, such as inflammation and weight gain. Many cereals advertise having health benefits, but still make sure to read the ingredients. You’re better off replacing breakfast cereal with yogurt, eggs, or quinoa.

3. Pre-Packaged Lunches

Depending on where you’re purchasing pre-packaged lunch, it may not taste as good or be healthy. Instead, pack your own lunch. To save time, spend a day every week meal-prepping your lunch for the entire week.

4. Frozen Dinners

Frozen dinners are convenient and generally showcase great packaging. It’s not uncommon to see food that looks fresh and healthy. However, frozen food often doesn’t look the same as shown in the packaging after you’ve finished heating it.

A frozen burrito won’t taste the same as one made at home. It also won’t be healthier, depending on the type of burrito you make.

5. Soda

Soda tends to contain a lot of sugar. Like other items on this list, excess sugar can lead to diseases down the road. If you find yourself craving soda, replace this with sparkling water. The carbonated effect will feel familiar to a soda, but you won’t consume excess sugar.

6. Potato Chips

It doesn’t take a health expert to understand potato chips aren’t a healthy snack. You may be able to get away with consuming potato chips sparingly. However, you’re better off replacing them with kale chips, chickpeas, or almonds.

7. Candy

Most of us have a sweet tooth. However, frequent candy consumption may lead to health issues in the future. Skip candy as much as possible, and quench your sweet tooth with fruit or mixed nuts.

8. Processed Meats

Excessive red meat consumption can lead to high blood pressure and stomach issues. In a way, it may be good that red meat tends to be pricey, so you’ll purchase it less often. Avoid purchasing meat frequently and opt for healthier alternatives for your protein intake.

9. Instant Noodles

Instant noodles might save you money, but they will rarely be packed with sufficient nutrients. Healthier alternatives include chickpea or veggie pasta. Depending on your taste buds, you can also opt for red lentils.

10. Microwave Popcorn

A box of popcorn will come out to be more expensive than purchasing popcorn kernels. Although it might seem like a lot of work, you can quickly pop kernels using a pot or popcorn machine in only a few minutes. Additionally, you’ll avoid additives and save money.

12. Sugary Yogurts

Yogurt, such as greek yogurt, can be a healthy option to consume. However, yogurts high in sugar aren’t, especially if you’re lactose intolerant. Instead, purchase ones with less sugar and additives.

Like other items on this list containing excess sugar, avoid them because they can lead to issues in the future.
