12 Biggest Reasons to Appreciate Dogs

Dogs are often called man’s best friend, but what makes them the ultimate companion? A few things may already come to mind if you’ve ever owned a dog. However, we’ve compiled a list of reasons dogs make great companions for people who are clueless or want to learn more about dogs. Even so, from their unconditional love to offering companionship, this list falls short of the pure joy dogs bring to our lives.

1. Unconditional Love

There aren’t many pets that will patiently wait for you to return. Dogs certainly check the mark here and will wag their tails and bark with joy upon your arrival from work or running errands. Although dogs can’t understand you, their unconditional affection is as real as any human’s.

If you adopt a dog, anticipate unconditional love like you’ve never experienced before. In fact, unlike humans, who change in temperament, dogs will stay consistent with their excitement to see you.

2. Loyalty

It’s not uncommon to watch instances when a dog follows their owner or their family. Dogs may even find their way back home if left off their leash. These furry companions are most likely grateful that you feed and provide them with shelter. The loyalty that follows is binding.

3. Emotional Support

Dogs don’t just offer love and loyalty; they also bring emotional support. Research shows that their unconditional love helps relieve stress. Whether it’s from work, relationships, or something else, your dog will always be available to help.

4. Encouraging Physical Activity

Most dog owners wake up early in the morning before starting their workday to walk their dogs. Although it’s not always easy, a dog will force you to squeeze in steps daily. According to medical experts, walking 10,000 steps a day has multiple health benefits. Additionally, you can train your dog to jog with you. Just be sure you’re running in a safe area.

5. Companionship

Your best friend, spouse, or family member won’t be available to help you emotionally at some point in your life. However, your dog will be there to at least give you company as you process your feelings. Even though your dog won’t understand what you’re saying, the attention and joy your dog provides is often enough for you to feel less alone.

6. Teaching Responsibility

Some argue that owning a dog is the equivalent of caring for a child. Although this may be a stretch, it’s not completely off. For example, you’ll have to build the discipline to feed your dog multiple times per day. Additionally, you’ll have to ensure your dog doesn’t eat certain things. In many ways, owning a dog can be a crash course on some things to expect when you have a child.

7. Non-judgmental Presence

Often, we refrain from saying or doing certain things in front of others, mainly because we’re scared of being judged. However, you may feel comfortable being your silly self with your dog. Your dog won’t judge you, potentially helping you accept yourself more for who you are.

8. Enhance Family Bonding

Dogs tend to blend in with your family naturally. For example, if you have a toddler, expect your dog to be playful with them. Additionally, they’ll be protective of everyone in the family. Because of this, dogs integrate well with families and can often make interpersonal bonds stronger. If you ever find yourself in an argument, it will be hard to stay upset watching your dog wag its tail with joy.

9. Joy and Laughter

Because of the unconditional love and joy dogs bring, it’s hard not to feel happy. In fact, petting and cuddling with your dog can make you feel relaxed. It’s a win-win for both you and your dog. Your furry friend won’t be the only one excited for you to arrive home.

10. Increasing Safety

Because dogs are loyal, they will protect you and your loved ones if danger arises. In most cases, you can expect your dog to bark at intruders and potentially attack if the situation seems hostile. However, this will vary depending on your dog’s breed and size. Keep in mind that although dogs have the right intention, they may also be easily frightened.

11. Adaptive to Various Lifestyles

As you age, so does your lifestyle. Dogs are great at adapting to new environments but may feel some stress doing so. Be patient with your furry companion, especially if you’re undergoing drastic changes. Odds are they will adapt but need some time. Remember that your dog’s ability to adapt will vary based on breed, age, and previous training.

12. Offering a Sense of Purpose

Your dog will give you purpose. You’ll no longer be worrying just about yourself. If something happens to you, who will take care of your dog? Purpose doesn’t have to stretch to these extremes; even having a purpose for coming home is enough. Leaving work at 5:00 to ensure you feed your dog or take them for a walk might stop you from working so late.
